Chelsea Chong Kim is a teacher and author of the children’s book, “Carol the Carrot Bowls for the Salad Bowl.” With over a decade of experience shaping young minds in both prestigious private and public schools, Chelsea’s love for teaching and storytelling inspired her to become a children’s book author. Chelsea’s journey began in elementary education, where she seamlessly transitioned to Montessori and middle school classrooms, leaving an indelible mark as an inspirational teacher and her colorful adventure.
While crafting “Carol the Carrot Bowls for the Salad Bowl,” Chelsea wanted to create a story where all children feel included, inspired by the students she taught as a teacher. Each child brought immense joy to her and added their unique beauty to the classroom—not just in looks, but in their culture, learning abilities, and ways of expression. Just like fruits and veggies, each has unique flavors, shapes, and styles, making our society a vibrant mixed salad bowl. Chelsea was inspired to write this story to celebrate these differences. She compares life to a game of bowling, where each strike, spare, and miss is part of the journey, and everyone has the ability to aim for their goals—just keep on bowling!
Chelsea was inspired to create the characters that mirrors her own journey. Carol the Carrot, determined and resolute, reflects Chelsea’s drive to do things right, while Mandy embodies those moments of doubt we all experience. Coach Cucumber, with years of teaching experience, represents Chelsea’s role as a teacher, always encouraging her students to never give up on their dreams. Chelsea hopes to leave a lasting legacy for children, ensuring that even if she is no longer here, her words and their beauty will live on forever. Chelsea’s story is an invitation to understand that like the fruits and veggies, each of us adds a distinct flavor to the world, contributing to a richer, more inclusive salad bowl.
